1 O LORD, rescue me from evil people. Protect me from those who are violent, 2 those who plot evil in their hearts and stir up trouble all day long. 3 Their tongues sting like a snake; the venom of a viper drips from their lips. Interlude 4 O LORD, keep me out of the hands of the wicked. Protect me from those who are violent, for they are plotting against me. 5 The proud have set a trap to catch me; they have stretched out a net; they have placed traps all along the way. Interlude 6 I said to the LORD, "You are my God!" Listen, O LORD, to my cries for mercy! 7 O Sovereign LORD, the strong one who rescued me, you protected me on the day of battle. 8 LORD, do not let evil people have their way. Do not let their evil schemes succeed, or they will become proud. Interlude 9 Let my enemies be destroyed by the very evil they have planned for me. 10 Let burning coals fall down on their heads. Let them be thrown into the fire or into watery pits from which they can't escape. 11 Don't let liars prosper here in our land. Cause great disasters to fall on the violent. 12 But I know the LORD will help those they persecute; he will give justice to the poor. 13 Surely righteous people are praising your name; the godly will live in your presence. 1 GOD, get me out of here, away from this evil; protect me from these vicious people. 2 All they do is think up new ways to be bad; they spend their days plotting war games. 3 They practice the sharp rhetoric of hate and hurt, speak venomous words that maim and kill. 4 GOD, keep me out of the clutch of these wicked ones, protect me from these vicious people; 5 Stuffed with self-importance, they plot ways to trip me up, determined to bring me down. These crooks invent traps to catch me and do their best to incriminate me. 6 I prayed, "GOD, you're my God! Listen, GOD! Mercy! 7 GOD, my Lord, Strong Savior, protect me when the fighting breaks out! 8 Don't let the wicked have their way, GOD, don't give them an inch!" 9 These troublemakers all around me--let them drown in their own verbal poison. 10 Let God pile hellfire on them, let him bury them alive in crevasses! 11 These loudmouths--don't let them be taken seriously; These savages--let the Devil hunt them down! 12 I know that you, GOD, are on the side of victims, that you care for the rights of the poor. 13 And I know that the righteous personally thank you, that good people are secure in your presence.

Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]! 9 Those who are fencing me in raise their heads; may the mischief of their own lips and the very things they desire for me come upon them. 10 Let burning coals fall upon them; let them be cast into the fire, into floods of water or deep water pits, from which they shall not rise. 11 Let not a man of slanderous tongue be established in the earth; let evil hunt the violent man to overthrow him [let calamity follow his evildoings]. 12 I know and rest in confidence upon it that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will secure justice for the poor and needy [of His believing children]. 13 Surely the [uncompromisingly] righteous shall give thanks to Your name; the upright shall dwell in Your presence (before Your very face).

Selah 6 O LORD, I say to you, "You are my God." Hear, O LORD, my cry for mercy. 7 O Sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, who shields my head in the day of battle- 8 do not grant the wicked their desires, O LORD; do not let their plans succeed, or they will become proud. Selah 9 Let the heads of those who surround me be covered with the trouble their lips have caused. 10 Let burning coals fall upon them; may they be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, never to rise. 11 Let slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down men of violence. 12 I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. 13 Surely the righteous will praise your name and the upright will live before you.
